Building a Healthier Community

Farm Health

Invitation to participate

We are looking for farmers interested in participating in a feasibility study that will assist with early recognition and prevention of asthma. Farmers will need to live or work on a farm located in the Western Elgin Area (Dutton, West Lorne and Rodney). The study will take place through the West Elgin Community Health Centre and will include the completion of questionnaires and an evening educational session. We are looking for your support to help improve the health of our agricultural sector.

If you are interested in participating in or have questions regarding the study, please contact Diane Van Dyk at dvandyk@wechc.on.ca or 519-768-1715 ext. 2224.

Farmers and rural farm families are one of West Elgin Community Health Centre’s priority populations.  The Centre is committed to supporting the needs of this group in our community.

In the summer of 2005 over 400 farmers from Western Elgin County participated in a “Farm Family Survey” that looked at Occupational Illness and the Health and Safety of the farming community. We learned many things.  The study helped to understand:

  • The level of agricultural occupational illness present in local area farm owners/operators
  • The potential for illness due to exposure to hazards on the farm
  • Areas where we could help provide health related educational assistance

Here are some of the activities that began as a result of this work:

  • CPR classes were conducted for farm families in the community
  • A subsequent Asthma Program was developed
  • An Occupational Illness screening questionnaire was developed and continues to be used by our Physicians and Nurse Practitioners to identify and help manage individuals who have work related illnesses
