What is the difference between a Dietitian and a Nutritionist?
Who should see a Dietitian?
Individual, couple, or family sessions are available for people with all kinds of food and health related concerns such as:
- Meal planning
- Lower fat eating
- Dealing with high cholesterol
- Celiac disease
- General healthy eating
- Crohn’s disease
- Irritable Bowel Syndrome
- Hypertension (high blood pressure)
- Budgeting for the grocery store
- Ulcerative Cholitis
- Grocery store tours
- Disordered eating and eating disorders
- Non-dieting approach to weight management
- Picky eaters
- Food allergies and sensitivities
- Constipation or diarrhea
- Extreme weight loss due to illness
- Nutrition support during cancer treatment and care
- Diverticulosis/Diverticulitis
- Prenatal nutrition
- Nutrition and sport
- Hyperlipidemia (high cholesterol or high triglycerides)
- Kidney problems
- Gastroesophogeal Reflux and Peptic Ulcers

What about Diabetes?
The West Elgin Community Health Centre has 2 diabetes education and support teams. They can see you for managing your diabetes, preventing or delaying the onset of diabetes and its complications, hypoglycemia, gestational diabetes, IGT (impaired glucose tolerance), and diabetic teaching… please see the Diabetes Education and Management page for more information.
Who can Access this Program/Service
- Anyone who lives within our catchment area
- No doctor’s referral is necessary; you can refer yourself at any time. We do suggest it is best that your doctor or other primary care providers know you are seeing a dietitian
- If referring yourself:
- Please call the Centre at 519-768-1715 ext 2202 and leave a message with the Dietitian requesting a self-referral package
- You can pick up your package or it can be mailed to you
- Once filled out, the self-referral can be dropped off or mailed to the Centre
- Once we receive your information, you will be contacted with what to do next! That may be an appointment or a recommendation to attend a current group session
